Do you suffer a knocking noise from the rear of the vehicle when moving away from a standstill or changing gear? Or do you experience jerkiness from the transmission as you engage drive in first or reverse gears, which stops you moving away smoothly no matter how carefully you engage the clutch? If so, there's a very strong probability that your Freelander has a worn or broken diff nose mount.
Over time, the rubber bush in the mount deteriorates and fails to support the rear diff firmly. Once this starts to occur, the diff starts to rock as you move away from a standstill, or between gear changes. As the problem worsens, the input shaft into the rear diff begins to come into contact with the floorpan shield above it, making a disconcerting banging noise when pulling away from a standstill, or during higher torque gear changes.
The diff mount itself is pretty simple to swap and can normally be changed in under an hour by a competent DIYer. Once swapped, you'll immediately notice that drive take up is smoother and that banging from the diff should be eliminated.
